Hantverk på hög nivå i Pfalz

Weingut Philipp Kuhn är en familjeegendom döpt efter dagens ägare och vinmakare, men egendomen omnämns första gången redan 1692. Då beskrevs ägorna som ett blandjordbruk och första skörden av druvor ägde rum först 1922 då man skördade druvor i vingården Kirschgarten för första gången. Idag jobbar Philipp enbart med odling av druvor och tillverkning av vin och hans viner vinner årligen både kritiker och vinälskares hjärtan. År 2021 utsågs han för femte gången till ”Riesling Champion of the Year” av magasinet Vinum.

Historia

Philipp Kuhn tog över familjegården i början av 1990-talet när han var endast 20 år gammal och har trots sin ännu relativt unga ålder många skördar i bagaget –  alltid efter devisen att älska livet och njuta av det i sällskap av gott vin. Sedan Philipp Kuhn tog över familjeföretaget har det bokstavligen talat strösslats priser över hans viner. Hans senaste bragd var då han i september 2021 gick vinnande ur striden när 15 jurymedlemmar utsedda av magasinet Vinum skulle utse ”the Riesling Champion 2021”. Från framstående hus, ambitiösa nykomlingar, engagerade traditionalister, skickliga kooperativ och statligt ägda egendomar provades sammanlagt 1,600 rieslingviner (och 50 rieslingrelaterade druvor som rieslaner och scheurube) i flera steg för att utse vinnaren. När juryn provat alla vinerna var det en vinmakare kvar som hade det bästa genomsnittet för sina inskickade viner, nämligen ödmjuke Philipp Kuhn som vunnit priset fyra gånger tidigare. Weingut Philipp Kuhn utsågs dessutom till WEINGUT DES JAHRES 2022 av Tysklands ledande vinkritiker Gerhard Eichelmann som varje år utser landets bästa vingårdar – nyligen fick de även utmärkelsen ”Weltklasse Weingut 2025” av Eichelmann. Mycket välförtjänta titlar till Philipp och hans team, som varje år levererar viner av absolut världsklass!

Vingårdar

Philipp Kuhn håller till i Pfalz som ligger i Rhendalen. Här bidrar Rhenfloden med värme och regionen åtnjuter drygt 2000 soltimmar och knappt 600 liter regn per år. Jordmånen karaktäriseras av massiv kalksten och på vissa ställen har det blåst upp löss – ett mineralrikt sediment. Man äger idag 40 hektar vingårdar där 60% av produktionen är vita viner och hela 40% är vigd åt blå druvsorter. Eftersom Pfalz är Tysklands varmaste vinregion lämpar sig klimatet väl för just blå druvor och på gården finns för Tyskland ovanliga druvsorter som bland annat merlot. De viktigaste druvorna är emellertid riesling och pinot noir. Utöver dem odlar Philipp även weissburgunder (pinot blanc), chardonnay och grauer burgunder (pinot gris). Gården är stolta medlemmar i VDP (Vereinigung Deutsche Prädikatsweingüter).  Philipp Kuhn har fem olika Grosse Lage: Kirschgarten, Steinbuckel, Im Grossen Garten, Saumagen och Schwarzer Herrgott. Utöver dessa har de även tre Erste lage: Kapellenberg, Steinacker och Burgweg.

Vinifikation

Alla druvor skördas för hand och de jobbar helt utan kemiska bekämpningsmedel och tillsätter ingen jäst. Majoriteten av alla viner som produceras är torra. De vita vinerna vinifieras och lagras i ståltank, vissa viner får lagras på sin jästfällning som bidra med krämighet och rondör. En mindre del av dem har viss kontakt med ek. När det gäller de röda vinerna lagras de i 228 liters ekfat och buteljeras utan filtrering. Philipp är ett stort fan av Bourgogne vilket tydligt märks både i hans chardonnay och pinot noir. Philipp Kuhn är certifierad enligt ”FAIR’N GREEN”, som förutom att odla ekologisk även innebär att han tar ett socialt ansvar. Sedan årgång 2018 är samtliga viner vegancertifierade.

1. What is your favorite time of the year in the vineyards?
”My favorite season is, of course, autumn. The vineyards are full of beautiful grapes and it is a delight to walk through the rows and to examine the great qualities. You taste the grapes and you already have a picture in mind how the coming wine will taste.”

2. What is your favorite part of being a winemaker?
”My favorite part of being a winemaker is the annual course in the vineyard from pruning, flowering, vineyard care and slow development of the grapes to full ripeness in autumn. It feels like watching your child grow up.”

3. What is your least favorite part of being a winemaker?
”I hate office work and bureaucracy. There is nothing worse than spending a day on unnecessary forms.”

4. If you had to describe the style of your winemaking with just one sentence – what would it be?
”There is no recipe to produce good wines, so I face the new challenges every year with a portion of good gut feeling, experience and the right feeling!”

5. Which of your own wines would you bring to a deserted island, and why?
”Definitely Riesling Tradition. This wine is a joker, quenches my thirst and dispels my boredom through its charisma. It just never gets boring with my favorite wine.”
